3 Day Digital Photography Course for young people 11-17 years
Whether your young person has just picked up a camera or wants to gain confidence shooting in manual mode, this course covers all the essentials:
How to use manual mode on an SLR camera
Understanding exposure, aperture, and ISO
Tips on composition and creative framing
Photographing people and nature
Basic editing techniques
Curating and presenting their final shots
Plus: Camera hire is included if they don’t have one!
All you need to know:
What will the course cover?
You’ll learn how to use an SLR camera confidently in manual mode, getting to grips with settings like aperture, shutter speed, and exposure. We’ll explore different photographic styles and look at inspiring photographers to help spark ideas. You'll learn how to compose a great shot, use natural light effectively, and take expressive portraits.
Each afternoon, there will be hands-on practical assignments to put your learning into action and help build your confidence behind the camera.
Towards the end of the course, we’ll begin editing images to show the full journey from capture to final presentation. On the final day, we’ll choose some favourite shots to share in a mini showcase for parents or carers.
Do I need my own camera?
Ideally, yes. If you already have one—brilliant! It should have manual settings and the ability to change lenses for the best experience.
What if I don’t own a camera?
No problem! We’ll have a few cameras available to share within the group. However, to get the most out of the course, we recommend hiring your own. We can guide you through the process—it’s straightforward, with cameras typically delivered to your door and returned via courier. The cost is around £60 per day (including insurance), depending on the model. Please note, it is not compulsory.
Do I need an SD card?
An SD card would be most useful so you can keep the photos you take. However, any photos taken of any of the group during the course would require a model release for you to use them or keep them. Otherwise we will have to delete them.
What is the format of the day?
We will start at 10am and finish at 3pm. All children will need a packed lunch and snacks and drinks for the day. The course will be a mix of theory and practical, with lots of time to apply their learnings on a practical basis.
Where will the photo course be held?
The photo course will be held in the lovely secluded grounds of a small private school in Surrey (Bookham).
What age does my child need to be?
We are inviting children aged 11-17 years old to (ideally going into Year 7 and beyond).
Do I have to do the whole three days?
As the course is designed to teach the process of photography to a finished art form, then yes, all three days are required.
Can my child join if they have never used a camera before?
Absolutely, it is designed for complete beginners. However, if your child does have experience, we can teach them accordingly.
Will my child get to keep their photos?
As long as model release forms are signed for any pictures of identifiable people then yes. All pictures of nature or abstract/landscape you can keep.
About the Tutors:
Rebecca Price
I'm Rebecca Price of Rebecca Price Photography and from the moment I pressed the shutter on my first film camera, I was hooked. I began studying photography during my GCSE and A level years, where my inspiring photography teacher introduced me to the great documentary photographers of our time. That’s when I became fascinated by the power of storytelling through a single image.
I went on to study a Photography degree at Norwich University of the Arts, and I’ve now been a photographer for 20 years. Over the years, I’ve specialised in photographing portraits, weddings, events, and small businesses—always seeking to capture genuine moments with depth and feeling.
Now that I have two growing daughters, I’ve been keen to share my skills with them and would love to help others discover the joy of photography too.
Charlotte Webb
I've been running Charlotte Webb Photography since 2018. As a mum of three (now aged 11 to 17), I’ve had plenty of hands-on experience both photographing and managing children—skills that come in very handy on family and school shoots!
I also spent almost three years as Chair of our local school’s PTFA, where I organised events and oversaw children’s activities—juggling logistics, creativity, and a lot of energy!
These days, I also run a local networking group for Epsom & Ewell called The Small Business Co-Llab, which also hosts LinkedIn Local for Epsom & Ewell—bringing local business owners together to connect, collaborate, and grow.
